Samples Separate Successful Brands from Expensive Mistakes
Sampling is where your garment goes from concept to reality. A sample tells you if your pattern works, if the fabric performs correctly, if the construction holds up, and if the fit matches your vision. Skipping this step or rushing through it is the most expensive mistake new brands make.
Our sample room operates inside the LA Fashion District with dedicated sample sewers who specialize in first prototypes. These are not production operators running your sample between bulk orders. They are sample specialists who understand that a first sample needs to be sewn precisely so you can evaluate the pattern and construction accurately.
We typically produce first samples in 2 to 3 weeks and fit sample revisions in 1 to 2 weeks. Every sample includes detailed notes on construction observations, fabric behavior, and any recommendations for pattern or specification changes before production.

Three Stages of Sample Development
First Sample (Proto)
The initial prototype sewn from your pattern. This is your proof of concept. It shows you the silhouette, proportions, and basic construction. First samples are often made in similar but not exact fabric to keep costs down. The goal is evaluating the pattern, not the final fabric. Typical cost: $250 to $600 depending on complexity.
Fit Sample
After reviewing the first sample and making pattern revisions, the fit sample is sewn in the actual production fabric. This sample is fit tested on a live model or fit form matching your target size. You evaluate the fit, drape, and fabric performance together. Most styles need 1 to 2 fit sample rounds. Typical cost: $200 to $450 per revision.
Pre-Production Sample (PP)
The final sample sewn exactly as the production run will be. Same fabric, same construction, same labels, same packaging. This is your sign off sample. Once you approve the PP sample, production begins. This sample becomes the reference standard that QC checks every production garment against. Typical cost: $200 to $400.
