Frequently Asked Questions - Women's Ready to Wear Manufacturing

How much does it cost to manufacture dresses in Los Angeles?

Basic knit dresses cost $20-$32 per unit at 50-piece quantities. Woven dresses with lining and moderate complexity run $28-$42 per unit. Evening or cocktail dresses with intricate construction cost $45-$75 per unit. This includes fabric, lining, construction, and finishing. Pattern making ($200-$400) and samples ($60-$150) are additional one-time costs per style.

8-12 weeks from concept to finished ready-to-wear. This includes pattern development (1-2 weeks), sampling and fit testing (2-4 weeks for 2-3 rounds), fabric sourcing (1-2 weeks domestic, 3-5 weeks imported), and production (3-4 weeks). Simple styles complete faster (8-10 weeks), complex construction extends timeline (10-14 weeks).

Yes. We specialize in delicate fabric handling including silk charmeuse, silk crepe, chiffon, fine linens, and luxury materials. These fabrics require experienced operators, specialized cutting techniques, and gentle handling to prevent damage. We use French seams, rolled hems, and appropriate finishing techniques for delicate materials. Silk and luxury fabric pieces cost more to manufacture due to material cost and specialized labor required.

Plan collections 6-9 months ahead of retail season. Spring/summer collections should begin development in September-October for March-April retail delivery. Fall/winter development starts March-April for September-October delivery. This allows time for design development, sampling, fabric sourcing, production, and shipping to your warehouse or retailers before peak selling season.

Most successful emerging brands start with one focused category they can perfect—either dresses, or coordinated separates (tops + bottoms), or elevated basics. Mastering one category before expanding builds brand credibility and avoids spreading resources too thin. Once you’ve validated product-market fit and perfected manufacturing in one category, expand into complementary categories. Focused launches perform better than scattered diverse offerings.
